5 Most Common Red Day Irritations You Should Look Out For
Even strong women feel uneasy when their red days are right around the bend.
A few days before our red days arrive an itch starts coming up, then we have to deal with cramps and our mood swings, not to mention that perpetual lower back pain among others. But with a sudden change in hormones, how do we know if what we’re feeling is normal or headed toward something more serious? Where do we draw the line between discomfit and a red day problem waiting to be unearthed?
The first step is to ask yourself: what are your usual red day tells? Does your skin start breaking out? Does it itch a little more than usual down there? Do you get cramps a few days before your red days arrive? These minute details are a few things you start paying more attention to. The good news is, the longer we’ve had to deal with our red days, the better we get to know our bodies.
Once you have a general idea of what your “normal” red day tells are, watch out for unusual symptoms. Maybe it comes in texture around your intimate area, itch, odor, or even discharge, all these may be trying to point you in a certain direction. If you’ve been having doubts, here are the most common red day problems you should look out for.
Skin Irritation
This is the least harmful of all reactions. Skin irritation usually shows up through itch and/or redness around the intimate area. In some cases you get rashes, but nothing too extreme. If you notice any of these, your skin may be reacting to various factors such as the material of your underwear, the materials in your sanitary pad or tampon, or something as physiological as a change in your hormones.
If you recently changed feminine brands, give your doctor a call to see if you are allergic to any of its components. If you changed your diet, this could also be another reactant. If it’s been very humid and you’ve been in synthetic underwear, your intimate area could also be collecting moisture which is why you feel discomfort.
While irritations like these can usually be solved with better red day hygiene practices, they could also turn into an infection if left unaddressed.
Bacterial Vaginosis
Red day itch is common among women on their menstrual cycle. But if that itch comes with a fishy smell and an unusual grey discharge, there’s a chance it could be “BV.” Bacterial Vaginosis or “BV” is an irritation that occurs when the vagina’s natural state is off-balance.
When a woman is on her red day streak, there is an automatic imbalance in her vagina’s pH level due to the blood and iron her body is discharging. And when that imbalance is sustained, her intimate area becomes extra prone to contracting BV. But not because it’s not a red day means we are completely immune to bacterial vaginosis. Other factors such as having unprotected sex, douching, having multiple sexual partners, and not properly cleaning your vagina may also heighten our chances of getting BV.
Yeast Infection
Yeast infection is another common infection women can contract on their red days. Being on your red days means you are losing nutrients and your immune system goes down, which is why we usually feel weaker on red days. And when our immune system is crashing, we are more prone to Yeast Infection.
One usual sign of yeast infection is having an intensified itch down there. The itch becomes so heightened that it turns into a painful, burning sensation that feels hotter than usual. “Yeast infection” is also known as candidiasis infection. This is a byproduct of your hormonal imbalance. And on red days that pH level goes up which means the “mildly acidic” becomes “more acidic.” And acidity and a higher level of estrogen is a recipe to reel in the yeast.
Pelvic Infection
So here’s a silent infection - the good news is, it won’t physically hurt you, the bad news is because you won’t see it coming, it’s hard to know you have it until the bad gets worse. So here’s what we mean.
Pelvic infection is what happens when bacteria crawls up through the vaginal canal and starts to settle in a woman’s pelvic organs. Because of all the collected discharge and bacteria released by the intimate area, women are most prone while they are on their menstrual cycle.
And here’s the clincher, because there usually are no signs or symptoms. For those who do get symptoms, they are very mild and show up through fever, an unpleasant vaginal odor, or bleeding outside your red day window.
But back to being a silent infection, you won’t really know if you have it until the bad gets worse. Meaning, until you start getting chronic pelvic pain or when you start struggling to get pregnant! And this is another reason to make sure you do an annual check-up with your OB-GYNE. It’s better to be on the preventive side of this silent infection than find out when it’s too late.
Chlamydia
Condoms aren't just made to avoid unwanted pregnancy, they’re also a good aid to protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STI) such as Chlamydia. This is an infection caused specifically by the chlamydia Trachomatis bacteria.
Ironically, STIs usually come with a misconception that it can be passed through physical touch, kissing, or even sharing a towel. To set the record straight — that’s NOT true. STIs like Chlamydia can only be passed through genital contact. This means first-hand exposure to infected genitals is the only way you can get this. And because this stems from a bacteria, you already know that red days are when women are most prone to this - specifically at the beginning and the latter days of a woman’s cycle.
So, what do you do?
Before you dismiss your red day itch, odor, and other symptoms, try and observe what else you have been feeling and see if it’s out of the ordinary. If it is, then call your OB-GYNE and set an appointment. And if all your pre-red day tells are still within the usual, don’t take that for granted and take care of your intimate area’s health by practicing proper hygiene.
