Take some time to read about the changes your body goes through during that time of the month.

Have you struggled with painful cramps and body pain during your red days? Don’t worry - you’re not alone! All these signs may point to the changes your body undergoes during this time of the month. Here’s a quick crash course on what really happens inside the body during your monthly menstrual cycle.

Why Do You Undergo These Changes Each Month?

Your body experiences many changes during your menstrual cycle. You can actually tell the phase it is in by taking note of these indicators:

1.    Breast tenderness, bloating, and/or tiredness: These typically occur during the menstrual phase or your red days, lasting for at least three days or up to one week. Your monthly cycle starts at this stage, and your body will release vaginal discharge, particularly blood, cells, and mucus.

At the beginning of your period, it’s common to see bright red, brown (old blood), or even pink blood (fresh blood mixed with vaginal mucus). Towards the end, the menstrual blood can take on a dark red, brown, or pink color.

2.    High energy levels and glowing skin: These are signs that your body is in the follicular phase. This involves the creation of follicles, one of which will turn into an egg cell. At the same time, your estrogen and progesterone levels rise and create an environment for an embryo to grow in case you get pregnant. You may also notice white, cloudy, or sticky vaginal discharge during this time.

3.    Cramps, breast tenderness, and high basal temperature: These mean that you’re in the ovulation phase. This stage occurs for at least 24 hours. Your ovary releases a mature egg cell that travels to your fallopian tube and into the uterus, where it awaits fertilization via a sperm cell. If the egg cell isn’t fertilized after 24 hours, it will die or dissolve. During this phase, you’ll likely notice clear, stretchy, and watery vaginal discharge.

4.    Mood changes, headaches, bloating, and breast tenderness: Your body is at the final stage: the luteal phase. This starts right after the mature egg cell is released. Your body releases hormones like progesterone and estrogen. If you don’t get pregnant, your body’s levels of these hormones will decrease.

Eventually, you may see vaginal discharge that’s predominantly white, although it can have tinges of yellow at times. You may also experience other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that can be a sign of an upcoming period.

Each of the phases mentioned is part of an intricate and totally normal monthly cycle. It’s important that we understand what goes on during these phases, so that you can prepare and take care of yourself adequately once the cycle starts. Some ways you can get this done include:

  • Tracking your menstrual cycle via downloadable applications
  • Working out as much as possible
  • Eating nutrient-rich food and taking additional supplements
  • Getting enough high-quality sleep
  • Drinking more water
  • Reducing caffeine intake
  • Practicing stress-relieving techniques
  • Taking extra care of your feminine area

Care for Your Feminine Area Well With the Right Wash

When you understand the changes that occur in your body this time of the month, you can take care of it better. While it can be stressful (and slightly painful) to deal with its effects, going the extra mile when it comes to protection can be beneficial for you.

Take better care of your feminine area by choosing the right type of feminine wash for regular days and on red days.
